| Discovery is an integral part of
the Montessori way of teaching. |
|
|
|
|
The Montessori Method allows children
to learn at their own speed and at their own level. The teachers’ role
is to help facilitate these opportunities but being ever so careful
not to intrude.
A child has a window or “sensitive period” where
they are able to absorb information without any effort. During these “sensitive
periods” the child will be able to discover the ability to learn
new information with ease.
Within the year the child will spend time
learning in the areas of
Practical Life, Sensorial
Development & Music Enrichment, Language
Arts, Culture & Science and Mathematics
|
|
|
Practical Life
These activities while simple and routine give the child a sense of pride, self-discipline,
importance and value. Children who are encouraged to experience life in all
areas (success and failure) will be better adjusted to real-life situations
later in life. The Practical Life Activities are divided into four categories.
 |
Preliminary Activities involve maintenance of the environment
and form the basis for all other activities.
- how to sharpen a pencil
- how to put a chair down
- how to roll a mat |
 |
Care of Self assists the child in becoming more independent.
- brushing hair
- washing hands
- tying shoes
- sneezing & coughing politely |
 |
Care of Environment assists the child in becoming consciously
aware of their surroundings and their place within it.
- sorting garbage
- sweeping the floor
- watering plants |
 |
Social Graces and Courtesies assist the child in becoming a
respectful, decent person familiar with socially accepted customs
and traditions. This is demonstrated by the teacher at all times
throughout the day.
- shaking hands
- please, thank you, & you’re welcome |

Sensorial Development
 |
Isolation of the senses increases the child’s ability
to concentrate. |
 |
Helps them to become a more centred and focused person. |
 |
The Sensorial Materials encourage self-learning. They help
to develop the cognitive skills of judgment, thinking, comparing
and associating. |
|
|
|
| Music Enrichment |
|
 |
Music encourages a child’s curiosity,
imagination and helps to develop intellect. |
 |
Listening to music allows for a creative outlet for self-expression.
Music can also help relieve stress and anxiety creatively. |
 |
The benefits are also recognized in mathematics, language and
writing ability. |
 |
Music helps to stimulate the child’s
abstract reasoning skills. Spatial-temporal reasoning (forming
mental images of physical objects and recognizing patterns)
increases when music is introduced. |
